70th anniversary of the Z3 – the world’s first functioning computer, made in Berlin

Whenwe think of computer-producing countries today, the USA and Silicon Valley or the South-East Asian countries spring to mind. It may come as a surprise, then, that Germany was where the digital revolution began 70 years ago. It was the Berlin inventor Konrad Zuse who developed the world’s first functioning computer, the Z3, back in 1941.

Journey Towards Immortality

Overcoming death and living forever: the idea of immortality has fascinated humankind probably since the beginning of civilization. A particularly prominent cultural form of human striving for eternal life is the ancient Egyptian mummies cult. A special exhibition devoted to this subject, entitled ‘Journey Towards Immortality’, has been mounted by Frankfurt’s Archaeological Museum in cooperation with the Egyptian Museum of Florence.

Munich Literature Festival

In November, Munich will be transformed into a city of literature as the Munich Literature Festival is held for the second time in the Bavarian capital. This year, once again, the festival will showcase, examine and pay tribute to contemporary literature. The festival programme features a wide range of events including readings, discussions and the award of the Geschwister Scholl Prize. More than 70 writers have been invited to attend.
